On Friday, 28th February, Corrib Beo, in collaboration with the newly formed Corrib Catchment Partnership (CCP), hosted a landmark event at the Oughterard Anglers and Boatmen Association to recognise Boston Scientific’s generous support for environmental and educational initiatives throughout the Corrib Catchment.

 

At the start of the proceedings, Jen Cunningham, Project Manager, Corrib Beo, warmly welcomed attendees and remarked that Boston Scientific’s generous support empowered us to sustain critical conservation efforts and deepen our engagement with schools and local communities, ensuring the long-term protection of the Corrib. She mentioned the work of the Corrib Catchment Partnership, strengthened by LAWPRO’s invaluable contributions, demonstrated the power of community collaboration in preserving our natural environment. Jen extended heartfelt thanks to Boston Scientific for their invaluable support.

 

Matthew Tierney, Chairman of the Oughterard Anglers & Boatmen Association, then addressed the gathering. He highlighted the special role played by the Transition Year Students from St. Paul’s Secondary School in Oughterard, who had previously planted whips and eagerly anticipated returning to witness their growth in the coming years.

 

Kevin O’Brien, Project Manager for Facilities at Boston Scientific, then spoke about the company’s signature legacy project celebrating its 30-year anniversary in Ireland. He highlighted that Boston Scientific’s support is not only creating a lasting environmental impact but also reinforcing its deep commitment to sustainability and community engagement.

 

Kevin was joined by two colleagues from the Boston Scientific Green Team, Rachel Kelly and Tomás Doyle, as well as Catherine Keogh from the STEM Team. He emphasised that Boston Scientific sees Corrib Beo as an ideal partner, perfectly aligned with the company’s long-standing collaboration with local schools.

 

With Boston Scientific’s 4,500 employees influencing nearly 20,000 people, this partnership presents a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact in Galway. Kevin outlined how the initiative will include multiple tree-planting events alongside school visits, with that day’s ceremony serving as the official launch of this year’s activities.

 

Dr. Bernadette White, Regional Coordinator for LAWPRO’s Western Region, highlighted the organisation’s efforts in conducting in-depth assessments to identify and address pressures affecting water quality. She also introduced Janet Laffey, LAWPRO’s Community Water Development Officer, East Galway & Roscommon, who collaborates with community groups such as Corrib Beo and the Corrib Catchment Partnership, underscoring the significance and impact of their collective work in safeguarding water resources.
