The term ‘Gaeltacht’ is used to describe the regions in Ireland in which the Irish language is, or was until recently, the primary spoken language of the majority of the community. Gaeltacht regions are recognised in Government orders under the Gaeltacht Act 2012.  There are presently ten named Gaeltacht language planning areas in County Galway, five of which border Lough Corrib. Language planning processes are taking place within these areas ensuring they retain their Gaeltacht status.

Below is information on each of the language planning Gaeltacht areas around Lough Corrib, and their published language plans.  Corrib Beo fully respect the importance of preserving our National language and have been fortunate to work with our local Language Officers on several bi-lingual projects.
